King drops pair to Augusta

FLORENCE, S.C. – The King University baseball team closed their opening weekend at Francis Marion with a pair of defeats to August University. The Jaguars took game one 4-2 before taking the second game by the same score.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nicolas Keister led King with two hits in the twinbill, both coming from the leadoff spot.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Augusta took the lead early in the contest, scoring three unearned runs in the second inning. The Jaguars got three run scoring singles from Christopher Michals, Tyler Roberts and Clint Hardy.
  • In his first appearance for the Tornado pitcher Gus Gill then settled down, throwing up zeros for the next three innings until the Jaguars scored a run in the sixth.
  • King threatened to get on the board in the fifth inning as Anthony Hunt drew a one out walk before Josh Stephens and Tyler Bailey registered consecutive singles to load the bases. However, Augusta's pitcher David Bermudez got the final two outs, leaving the bases full of Tornado.
  • Trailing 4-0 in their last at bat, the Tornado scraped together a pair of runs, the first on a pinch-hit double from Mark Hencken that scored Hunt. Hencken later scored on an error, but the Tornado couldn't push any more runs across, falling 4-2.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • King came out and grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning behind a pair of RBI singles from Preston Douglas and Mark Michael after Keister led off the game with a single.
  • However, the Jaguars answered quickly, cutting their deficit in half in the top of the second inning.
  • Jim Wagner laced a one-out triple and Michals followed with a single to make the score 2-1 after two.
  • Augusta evened the tally in the fourth inning as Hunter Boose ripped a leadoff double and later scored on a Nick Rau single.
  • Boose again doubled to start the sixth, and later scored on a Tornado error to give Augusta the lead.
  • The Jaguars added one on a Hardy double in the top of the seventh. Joey Stillwell got the final three outs in the bottom of the second, handing King the 4-2 loss.

FOR THE FOES

  • Hardy posted three hits and drove in two runs in the doubleheader to lead Augusta.
  • Rau and Michals also registered three hits apiece in the doubleheader. Rau drove in one and scored one while Michals scored twice and drove in two runs.
  • Boose registered two doubles, both in the second game.

UP NEXT

  • The Tornado are scheduled to travel to Brevard College on Tuesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
  • Augusta is in action again on Saturday when they host Anderson University in a doubleheader to open a three game set.
