Offense erupts as King blows past Brevard

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team turned in one of their best offensive performances in recent memory on Wednesday afternoon, registering 24 hits in a road victory at Brevard College. The Tornado had four players record three hits as King earned a 19-6 come-from-behind victory.

KING HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sligh drove in a team-high four runs, all coming on one swing as he ripped a grand slam, his first career home run in the fourth inning. He also laced a double in the fourth and ended the day with three hits.
  • Douglas went 3-for-7, scoring three times and driving in three runs.
  • Whitt registered three hits on six at bats, driving in three and scoring twice.
  • Sattz also registered three hits, going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in.
  • Bailey, Hencken and Moises Soto all registered two hits for the Tornado.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brevard grabbed the lead with a run in the first inning and added four more in the second to take an early 5-0 lead.
  • However, King came back with five runs in the top of the third inning. Douglas and Whitt ripped back-to-back two-run doubles before Sattz registered a run scoring single to even the contest.
  • Sligh started a nine-run fourth inning with a double and Bailey followed with a single to place Sligh. Sattz earned a bases loaded walk to plate one and Dayton recorded a run scoring single before Sligh came up with the big blow, a grand slam that gave King a 14-5 lead.
  • The Tornado tacked on single runs in each the fifth and eighth innings before putting the game out of reach with three in the ninth to take the contest 19-6.

FOR THE FOES

  • Spencer led the Tornados, going 3-for-4 with one run batted in.
  • Smith drove in three going 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly.
  • Dix, Noah Poteat and Morrison all registered two hits for Brevard.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • King registered 24 hits in the contest, their most since 2011-12 when the also registered 24 hits, coming at Mars Hill University.
  • The 24 hits also marks the fifth time since King has been NCAA Division II members (2011-12) they have reached at least 20 hits in a contest.
  • A season ago, King recorded 23 hits against Belmont Abbey College.

UP NEXT

  • King plays their home opener on Saturday when they host the University of Charleston (W.Va.) in a doubleheader that starts at 12:00 p.m. The two teams will square off again on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
  • Brevard is in action again on Saturday and Sunday when they host Mars Hill University.
