Tornado drop tight affair to Lander

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A day after splitting the two matches at the Queens University Tournament, the King University women's volleyball team dropped a tight three set match to Lander University. The first set went to extra points, but the Bearcats took the set 26-24 before taking the final two sets by a total of five points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set went back-and-forth and a kill by Lauren Willoughby gave King a 24-21 advantage. However, the Bearcats rolled off five straight points, and ended the 26-24 victory with a block.
  • Lander grabbed control of the second set in the early going, but King worked their way back from a five point deficit to even the score at 21-21. The score was again even at 22 and 23 before Lander scored the final two points to take the set 25-23.
  • King held a 17-13 advantage late in the third set before the Bearcats scored six straight points to gain the advantage. The Tornado came back to even the score at 19-19, but couldn't grab the lead as Lander took the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
  • Olivia Underwood posted a double-double, handing out 35 assists to go along with 14 digs.
  • Amy Serowski added 12 digs from the libero position.
  • Willoughby was the only Tornado to reach double figures in kills with 13.

FOR THE FOES

  • Tarryn Angermeier led Lander with 10 kills while posting a .286 attack percentage.
  • Khiani Kelly added nine kills and Halle Dotson posted eight kills.
  • Julia Ferreira-Alves registered a match-high 18 kills.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Underwood posted her first double-double of the year after recording seven a season ago.

UP NEXT

  • King takes on host Queens University in the finale of the tournament tonight at 7:00 p.m.
  • Lander faces Catawba College at 5:15 p.m. in the tournament finale.
