King sneaks past Catawba behind Willoughby's double-double

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The King University women's volleyball team opened their season on Friday at the Queens University Tournament on Friday morning with a see-saw affair against Catawba College. The first three sets were decided by a total of six points, each at 25-23 with King taking the first two frames before the Indians forced fifth set that the Tornado took 15-6 to open the season 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing 21-17 in the first set, King rolled off six straight points to gain the lead and eventually take the set.
  • King trailed late in the second set by the score of 22-21 before they scored four of the final five points to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Catawba had an early 2-1 lead in the fifth set before Ashleigh Manke started 6-0 Tornado run with one of her three kills in the match to give King separation en route to the 15-6 victory.
  • The Tornado outhit Catawba in kills (59-39) and in terms of hitting percentage (.126-.108) in the season-opener.
  • Senior Lauren Willoughby posted a match-high 18 kills, including a seven in the first set. She added three in the fifth set to help King take the victory. On the defensive end she added 14 digs for her first double-double of the season.
  • King found their offensive rhythm in the final set, hitting .467 with nine kills on 15 attempts and only two errors.
  • Cathy Scaniffe started her career in the Scarlet and Navy with 13 kills, including six in King's second set victory. On the defensive end she added eight digs.
  • Grace Underwood was the final Tornado to reach double figures, posting 10 kills.
  • Libero Amy Serowski registered nine digs in the first set en route to a career-best 20 digs to pace the defense.
  • Freshman Haley Roe earned the start for the Tornado and ranked third on the team with 13 digs.
  • Olivia Underwood nearly reached the 50-assist plateau, posted 49 assists for the Tornado.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The double-double was Willoughby's first since her freshman year when she posted two. Her last one came on October 2, 2012 at Tusculum.
  • The five set victory is King's first of the season, matching last year's total.

FOR THE FOES

  • Catawba was led by McKenzie Garrison who had 15 kills and 12 digs.
  • Alex Hopper also reached double figures in kills with 10.
  • Along with Garrison, Kaytee Frabotta (11) and Allison Benton (13) reached double figures in digs.
