King stays unbeaten in conference play with win at BAC

BELMONT, N.C. – Following three consecutive overtime matches, the King University men's soccer team was able to dodge a fourth with a late goal to take the lead in the final 15 minutes. Luis Calderon played a part in both goals finishing the game with a goal and an assist as King defeated Belmont Abbey College 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King was on the scoreboard early in the match when Calderon connected with a cross from Ryan Murphy to net a goal in the 11th minute.
  • King held their lead until the 67th minute when Belmont Abbey tied the score at 1-1.
  • King came back to re-take the lead when Calderon sent a cross into the box and Brian Butler lazered one through the Belmont Abbey defense and found the back of the net with 11 minutes left in the match.
  • The match was played close throughout as King recorded nine shots to Belmont Abbey's 10.

FOR THE FOES

  • Belmont Abbey's Nick Fuller netted the equalizer from an assist by Declan McQuillan.
  • This was Fuller's first goal of the season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • This marks Calderon's first goal of the season and his third assist of the season.
  • Butler's game-winning goal marks his first wearing Scarlet and Navy
  • This is the first time as Conference Carolinas members that King has been unbeaten through their first four conference matches.
