Tornado drop home opener to Trevecca Nazarene

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's volleyball finally played their first home game of the season and Trevecca Nazarene spoiled the excitement in the Student Center Complex. The Trojans came out and took the first two sets before coming back late in the fourth to earn the 3-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado came out firing in the first set, opening up a 13-7 and forcing two Trojan timeouts in the early going. The timeouts proved to be timely as Trevecca Nazarene came back and evened the score at 16-16. They later pulled away to take the set 25-22.
  • Trevecca Nazarene kept their momentum going in the second set, before King came back behind a 6-1 run to even the score at 22-22 following a Cathy Scaniffe kill. However, the Trojans scored three of the final four points to take the set 25-23.
  • In the third set, the Tornado offense found their stride, hitting a blistering .500 in the frame. Scaniffe registered four kills in the set to lead King to the 25-15 set win and keep the match alive.
  • The Tornado had to come back in the fourth set, scoring four straight points to take a 24-23 lead. However, the Trojans bounced back to score three straight points to take the set 26-24.
  • Lauren Willoughby led King, posting a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs.
  • In three sets, Scaniffe posted 11 kills, hit .370 with one attack error on 27 attempts and registered seven digs.
  • Sarah Collins was the final Tornado in double figures with 10 kills on 20 attempts with three errors for an attack percentage of .350.
  • Setter Olivia Underwood dished out 42 assists and nine digs.
  • Defensively, Amy Serowski led the Tornado with 15 digs while Casey Williams added 14 digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Katelyn Atkinson led the Trojans with a match-high 22 kills to go along with 12 digs for the double-double.
  • Setter Loren Bennett posted 40 assists and six digs.
  • The Trojans had four players reach double figures in digs, led by Clare Taylor and Allison Boe with 13 while Atkinson and Ashleigh Lozier posted 12 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The double-double for Willoughby is her fifth of the year and second in the last three matches.
  • For the Tornado, their .500 attack percentage in the third set was their best percentage in a set this year, and their third time topping the .400 mark in a set.
  • The .370 attack percentage was the best of her career.

UP NEXT

  • King stays in the friendly confines of the Student Center on Tuesday when they host Milligan College at 3:00 p.m. and Concord University at 7:00 p.m.
  • Trevecca Nazarene next face Usurline College on October 2.
