Offense leads King to conference opening win over Emmanuel

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Going along with the recent theme, the King University women's soccer team had to deal with more weather on Saturday when they opened Conference Carolinas play against Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon. The Tornado controlled the game on the offensive end, and had numerous close misses at the goal, but they were able to come away with the 3-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado were on the attack from the onset and after six shots were off target or turned away, Kara Garrett put King on the board in the 15th minute after she dribbled the ball down the center of the defense and beat the keeper.
  • King continued to press, ripping shot after shot until the pressure paid off again in the 34th minute when Kendyl Baird found the back of the net.
  • Emmanuel cut into the deficit to start the second half when Stephanie Lamm picked up a ball in the middle of the defense and beat the goalkeeper.
  • Hulda Sigurdardottir stretched the Tornado lead back to two in the 70th minute when she took a pass from Miranda Smith and ripped a shot back across the goal to give King a 3-1 lead.
  • King outshot the Lions 31-9 and the Tornado placed 16 shots on goal to the Lions four.

FOR THE FOES

  • Lamm nets her first goal of the season.
  • Breanna Grizzle registered 13 saves for the Lions.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Garrett, Baird and Sigurdardottir all scored their second goals of the season.
  • Smith dished out her third assist of the season, a mark that sits atop the Conference Carolinas standings.
  • The conference-opening win marks the second straight year the Tornado have won their Conference Carolinas opener. Since joining Conference Carolinas 2-2-1 in conference opening contests.
