King splits day one of USC Aiken Invitational

AIKEN, S.C. – The King University women's volleyball team wrapped up play on day one of the USC Aiken Invitational against Lander University, a team the Tornado faced last weekend. The Tornado kept the first set close before the Bearcats pulled away in the final two sets to take the match 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado held the advantage in the early going of the first set, opening up a 12-9 advantage following a Lauren Willoughby kill. However, Lander came back and evened the set at 14. The set went back-and-forth and King held a 20-19 lead before Lander scored the final six points to take the set 25-20.
  • Lander grabbed control of the second set in the early going and never trailed to take the frame 25-11.
  • King jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set, but the Bearcats answered with a 6-0 run to take control of the set. Lander didn't look back, taking the set 25-14 for the sweep.
  • Sarah Collins led King with 10 kills.
  • Grace Underwood followed Collins with six kills.
  • Setter Olivia Underwood dished out 24 assists to go along with five digs.
  • On the defensive side, Amy Serowski posted a match-high 21 digs.
  • Casey Williams added 10 digs for the Tornado.

FOR THE FOES

  • Kendall Korte posted a match-high 13 kills to go along with eight digs.
  • Ali Kirk handed out 20 assists with Sophia Perkins posting 12 helpers.
  • Mallory Taylor and Julia Ferreira-Alves both accounted for 15 digs.
  • Kaitlyn Harrison added 12 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Collins has eclipsed double figures in kills twice in the last two matches. She had accomplished that feat only five times prior to this season.
  • Serowski's 21 digs sets a career-best, topping her previous mark of 20 that was set in the season-opener against Catawba College on September 4.

UP NEXT

  • The Tornado continue play at the USC Aiken Invitational on Saturday. King faces the host Pacers at 12:00 p.m. before taking on Nova Southeastern University at 2:00 p.m.
  • Lander takes on Palm Beach Atlantic University and Belmont Abbey College on Saturday at the USC Aiken Invitational.
