Top-ranked Tornado open season 4-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The King University women's wrestling team opened their season with an impressive showing at the first day of the Patriot Duals. The top ranked Tornado took four wins in pool play before they move into the championship bracket on Saturday.

THE BASICS vs. Oklahoma City "B"
FINAL SCORE: #1 King 35, Oklahoma City "B" 10
LOCATION: University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, Ky.
RECORDS: King 1-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King started with a 10-0 lead by taking wins by forfeit at 101 and 109 pounds.
  • Ranked third in her weight class, Samantha Klingel stretched the lead to 13-0 with an 8-0 win over Europa Cadaba at 116 pounds.
  • At 123 pounds, top-ranked Hanna Grisewood took an 11-0 win over Taylor Ivey.
  • In her first bout wearing the Scarlet and Navy, Hannah Jewell, who is ranked ninth at 130 pounds took a 10-0 win over Daniela Flores to stretch the King lead to 23-0.
  • Third ranked Jessi Kee followed with a 10-0 victory over Heiley Garcia at 136 pounds.
  • Following a win by forfeit stretch the King lead to 33-0, Oklahoma City scored in the final three bouts to make the final score 35-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado started their second match of the day with eight straight victories started by Marina Doi at 101 pounds.
  • Neal and freshman Ricki Liang followed with back-to-back victories to give King a 13-0 lead.
  • Grisewood took a pin in 1:32 at 123 pounds and Jewell followed with a pin in 2:21 at 130 pounds, giving King a 23-0 lead.
  • Kee earned a win at 136 and Forrest Molinari pinned her opponent at 143 pounds before Brenda Perez gave King a 35-0 lead with a win at 155 pounds.
  • Torey Barrett then capped the 43-3 win with a victory at 191 pounds.

LOCATION: University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, Ky.
RECORDS: King 3-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King got wins by pin from Liang at 116 pounds and Perez at 155 pounds to go along with five wins by default.
  • Ashley Iliff (109 pounds), Grisewood (123 pounds) and Jewell (130 pounds) all earned wins by technical fall, helping King to the 47-0 victory.

RECORDS: King 4-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado got off to a hot start behind wins from Regina Doi and Breonnah Neal at 101 and 109 pounds, respectively. Neal took her win by pin in 1:40.
  • Following a technical fall victory from Klingel at 116 pounds, Grisewood earned another win by pin in 1:33 at 123 pounds.
  • Jewell followed with a pin in 0:53 at 130 pounds.
  • King then got back-to-back win from Molinari and Perez at 143 and 155 pounds en route to the 35-8 victory.

UP NEXT

  • The championship bracket starts Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. when the Tornado will try to defend their title from a season ago.
