Trevecca Nazarene comes back to stun Tornado

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Facing a team a second time isn't usually easy, but the King University women's volleyball team had a chance to avenge a home loss to Trevecca Nazarene University when they traveled to Nashville to face the Trojans. King took the first two sets, but the homestanding Trojans came storming back to force a fifth set that went to extra points. Trevecca Nazarene took the marathon fifth set by the score of 22-20 to take the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado started out the first two sets on the attack, hitting .344 in the first set and .375 in the second set.
  • Leading 16-15 in the first frame, King used a 4-0 run that was capped by an Amy Serowski service ace and Ashleigh Manke kill to take control as King went on to take the set 25-20.
  • A pair of Manke kills around two Lauren Willoughby aces gave King a 5-0 lead in the second set, a lead they didn't relinquish taking the frame 25-14.
  • King held a 14-12 lead in the third set before Trevecca Nazarene scored four straight points to grab the lead. The set was even at 18 before the Trojans scored three straight points as they took the set 25-21.
  • The Trojans used a 5-0 run early in the fourth set to take a 10-5, ultimately going on to take the set 25-14 and force a fifth set.
  • King jumped ahead 5-1 behind a pair of Manke kills in the fifth set, but the Trojans came back to take a 10-9 lead.
  • The Tornado then held a 13-11 advantage following kills from Sarah Collins and Ashton Beckner.
  • However, the teams began to trade points at that point as King had three chances at match point and the Trojans had four opportunities to end the match before they took the set 22-20.
  • Manke led a trio of Torndo in double figures with kills, posting 18 and hitting .227.
  • Collins hit .292 with 11 kills while Grace Underwood recorded 10 kills and an attack percentage of .250.
  • Olivia Underwood posted a double-double with 48 assists and 12 digs.
  • Serowski led the defense with 16 digs while Haley Roe added 10.

FOR THE FOES

  • Katelyn Atkinson led the Trojans with 21 kills to go along with 14 digs for the double-double.
  • Alex Reuter followed with 13 digs.
  • Allison Boe led the defense with 19 digs.
  • Loren Bennett dished out 45 assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • For Underwood, that marks her fourth double-double of the season.
  • Manke's 18 kills mark a career-high, bettering her previous career-high of 17 set earlier this season.
  • The fifth set going to extra points marks the second time this season the Tornado have played into extra points in the decisive set this year.
  • The last time King won a match that went to extra points in the fifth set was in 2011 when they topped the University of Mount Olive 17-15.

  • The Tornado will be in action again on Friday when they travel to take on Barton College at 7:00 p.m. in Wilson, N.C. King will then face the University of Mount Olive on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
