King takes third at Cliff Keen Duals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The top ranked King University women's wrestling team competed at the Cliff Keen Duals on Friday and Saturday. The Tornado went 5-0 in pool play on Friday, but fell to Oklahoma City University in the quarterfinals of the gold bracket on Saturday. However, the Tornado bounced back to finish third, winning their final three matches of the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King dominated early in pool play against #14 Lindenwood-Belleville as Marina Doi and Breonnah Neal took wins by technical fall at 101 and 109 pounds, respectively.
  • Ricki Liang and Jessie Kee then took wins by fall at 116 and 143 pounds as King took the dual against Lindenwood-Belleville 46-1.
  • In the next match, King topped #9 Missouri Baptist 38-8 as Ashley Iliff and Samantha Klingel got the Tornado off to a hot start with a wins by fall at 109 and 116 pounds. Kee and Forrest Molinari also took wins by fall at 136 and 143 pounds before Doi capped the win with a technical fall victory at 101 pounds.
  • Hanna Grisewood and Rachel Hale got King off to a hot start against Oklahoma City Blue with back-to-back wins by fall at 116 and 123 pounds. Rachel Hale and Kee followed with technical fall victories at 130 and 136 pounds.
  • Molinari took a win by fall at 143 pounds and Jacqueline Williams capped the 42-6 victory with a technical fall win at 191 pounds.
  • The Tornado again got off to a great start again #14 Lyon as a decision victory by Hale followed by a technical fall win from Kee and win by fall from Molinari gave King a 17-0 lead.
  • Williams earned a win by fall at 191 pounds and Klingel capped the 38-3 victory with a win by fall at 116 pounds.
  • Pool play concluded with a 33-8 victory for the Tornado over #8 Wayland Baptist. Hale started the match with a win by decision before Kee and Molinari took wins by fall. Doi, Neal and Liang then took wins by technical fall before Grisewood capped the victory with a win by fall.
  • In the quarterfinals of the goal bracket King squared off with #3 Oklahoma City in a match that was tight. King jumped out to an 8-1 lead with a pair of technical fall wins from Kee and Molinari at 136 and 143 pounds.
  • However, the Starts won three straight matches to take the lead. Oklahoma City then led 17-15 before Klingel and Grisewood put King back ahead 22-18 with a technical victory and a win by decision.
  • However, the Stars took a technical fall win at 130 pounds to even the score. The winner was decided on criteria and because the Stars had more four points moves in the match, they were determined the winner.
  • King then defeated #1 Campbellsville before topping #4 Lindenwood 32-12 to move into the third place match.
  • The Tornado fell behind to Lindenwood, but King won the final eight matches, starting with back-to-back wins by fall from Williams at 191 and Doi at 101. Neal, Klingel, Hale and Kee all took wins by technical fall to give King the victory.
  • In the third place match against #7 Cumberlands, five straight wins from Williams, Doi, Neal, Klingel and Grisewood gave King the lead before Kee and Molinari capped the 24-15 victory.
