FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – In their second event of the season, the top-ranked King University women's wrestling team turned in another solid performance at the Emmanuel Open. The Tornado took home three individual champions, three runners-up and three third place finishes from the event.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marina Doi took home a title at 101 pounds, defeating a pair of wrestlers from the University of the Cumberlands, first topping Maia Phanthandara on a fall in 1:32 in the semifinals, and then defeating Sarah Allen 7-0 in the finals.
- At 109 pounds, Ashley Iliff finished first as well, starting her day with a 12-1 technical fall win over Kara Payton of Life University. She then topped Life's Tyesha Topps on a fall in 2:25 before defeating teammate Daisy Santos on a 4-2 decision in the finals.
- Jessi Kee went 3-0 on the day to take home a title at 136 pounds. She first defeated Cumberlands' Esmeralda Garcia on a 10-0 technical fall and followed that with a 12-0 technical fall over Lyon College's Alyssa Batiste. In the finals she topped Kristin Yamasaki on a 12-0 technical fall.
- Santos came up with a runner-up finish at 109 pounds, falling to teammate Iliff in the finals. Earlier in the day she defeated Crystal DeLucio of Cumberlands on a 10-0 technical fall and Nikki Weidman of Life on an 8-7 decision. In the semifinals she topped Arelys Valles of Cumberlands on a fall in 2:28.
- Wrestling at 155 pounds, Forrest Molinari started her day with a 4-3 decision over Avery Sims on Cumberlands before topping Cumberlands' Kaleigh Jennings on a fall in 3:49. However, she fell to Cumberlands' Jessika Rottier on a tight 3-2 decision in the finals to take second.
- At 191 pounds, Jacqueline Williams earned a win by fall in 1:57 over Raquel Valderrama of Campbellsville University before topping Malavine Saafi on a 13-3 technical fall in the semifinals. However, in the finals she fell to Alyssa LaFrancis of Cumberlands to take second.
- Regina Doi took home a third place finish at 101 pounds. She won her first bout on a fall in 1:21 over Ruby Ariosa of Campbellsville before falling to Allen on a 3-1 decision in the semifinals. She then came back to defeat Phanthandara on a 10-0 technical fall victory in the third place bout.
- Ricki Liang started her day at 116 pounds with a win by fall in 1:42 over Cumberlands' Makalya Bourbon before falling to champion Angelica Lianes of Cumberlands on a 6-2 decision. However, she came back for a pair of wins, including a 10-5 decision over Jazmin Perez of Lyon to give Liang a third place finish.
- Rachel Hale took a third place finish as well, wrestling at 130 pounds. She started the day with a 10-0 technical fall win over Samantha Abrego of Life before falling to runner-up Koral Sugiyama of Campbellsville. Hale then bounced back with a pair of wins, including a 6-0 decision over Lyon's Taylor Alva in the third place bout.
- Also at 191 pounds, Torey Barrett finished fourth. She took a win by fall in 3:22 over C.C. Sigler of Lyon, and another win by fall over Saafi in 2:22 to reach the third place bout. Howeer, she fell to Jesse Grubbs of Campbellsville to take fourth.
