Offensive attack leads King to sweep of Lees-McRae

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's volleyball team ran their winning streak to three matches on Saturday afternoon when they squared off against rival Lees-McRae College. The Tornado offense posted their most efficient output of the season as they took the 3-0 Conference Carolinas victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lauren Willoughby and Sarah Collins got the Tornado offense off to a hot start with kills to score the first two points of the match. The Tornado never trailed in the set as a pair of Willoughby kills gave King a chance a set point before Ashton Beckner gave King the 25-19 victory with a kill.
  • King used a 4-0 run to comeback and even the score in second set at 5-5. The spurt continued as King took an 11-5 lead following an Olivia Underwood ace that capped the run at 10-0. The Tornado took the set 25-12 on consecutive kills from Beckner and Willoughby.
  • In the third set King used a 5-0 run sparked by a Willoughby kill and ace to taken 18-10 lead as King took the set 25-16.
  • In the match, the Tornado only made nine attack errors for an attack percentage of .370.
  • Willoughby led the offense with 14 kills against three errors on 32 attempts for an attack percentage of .344. She added seven digs and four service aces.
  • Grace Underwood posted an attack percentage of .538, accounting for nine kills.
  • Collins and Beckner added six kills each with Beckner hitting .545 with zero errors and Collins hitting .333.
  • Cathy Scaniffe registered five kills in the final set and hitting percentage of .500.
  • Olivia Underwood accounted for 36 assists and six digs.
  • On the defensive side, Amy Serowski posted 14 digs and Angela Boudavong added 10.

FOR THE FOES

  • Haylee Leonard and Jordan Banta led the Bobcats with six kills apiece.
  • Madison Martin and Jariliz Cotte both led the team with nine digs each.
  • Allyson Schillinger posted a team-high 10 assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Tornado posted a season-best attack percentage of .370, marking the third time this season King has hit better than .300, and their second time in the last three matches.
  • King only made nine attack errors, marking the first time this season they have had less than 10 errors in a match. The last time the Tornado had less than 10 errors in a match was October 17, 2014 against Barton.
  • The 10 digs for Boudavong marked a career-best and her first time reaching double digits.
  • For Willoughby, the four aces matches a season-best, a feat she has done three times, including each of the last two matches.

UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again on Wednesday when they travel to take on Pfeiffer University. First serve from Misenheimer, N.C. is slated for 7:00 p.m.
  • The Bobcats travel to take on Belmont Abbey College on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
