Tornado come back to top Charleston in five

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's volleyball team returned to the Student Center Complex and came away with a come-from-behind victory over the University of Charleston on Tuesday evening. The Tornado took the first set, but had to comeback from down 2-1 to take the exhilarating 3-2 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King used a 3-0 run in the first set to gain separation at 10-7 as the King offense started to heat up. In all the run ended at 10-2 giving King a 16-8 lead as they took the set 25-17.
  • However, the Golden Eagles came back with an answer in the second set, using a 6-1 run to take an 18-10 lead. Charleston went on to take the set 25-18.
  • Charleston hit a blistering .600 in the 25-15 third set victory to take a 2-1 lead over the Tornado.
  • The Tornado fell behind early in the fourth set, but Lauren Willoughby and Ashleigh Manke started a Tornado run to vault them into the lead. King used a 6-1 run to take the lead and the set 25-20 to even the match and force a fifth set.
  • In the fourth set, Willoughby accounted for eight kills and Manke added five to lead the King offence to a .353 attack percentage.
  • With the fifth set even at 3-3, King rolled off four straight points behind Manke. Charleston got back within 11-9, but the Tornado match the Golden Eagles' points to take the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
  • Willoughby led King with 17 kills on 36 attempts and four errors for an attack percentage of .361. She added 12 digs for the double-double.
  • Manke added 15 kills while Ashton Beckner hit .316 with seven kills.
  • Amy Serowski led the defense with 16 digs while Casey Williams accounted for 11 digs.
  • Olivia Underwood dished out 44 assists.

FOR THE FOES

  • Mia Herrod led the Golden Eagles with 16 kills and hit .419.
  • Randi Estrada followed with 13 kills and six digs.
  • Shiann White also reached double figures in kills with 12.
  • Melissa Reyes posted a double-doubles with teams-highs of 21 assists and 16 digs.
  • Carly Granger added 15 digs and libero McKensie Milam added 13 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • For Willougby that marks her sixth double-double of the year, which leads the Tornado.
  • Willoughby also hit .361 in the victory, marking her second best output of the season and her fifth match over .300.
  • The win in a five sets marks their second of the season in five tries. The Tornado also defeated Catawba College in five in the season opener.

UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again in the Student Center Complex on Saturday when the return to Conference Carolinas play when the host Lees-McRae College. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m.
  • Charleston takes on Fairmont State University on Friday night.
