Women's Wrestling Commands Mat in Quad Meet at OCU

The Tornado women's wrestling program entered the match as the lowest-seeded team in the meet as the fourth ranked team in the nation, according to the WCWA rankings. Host Oklahoma City University, also the defending National Champions, remained undefeated after all was said and done but King came out with the next best record (5-1) after meet's end.

"We are really pleased with our finish," said Head Coach Jason Moorman. "I think the success has come a little earlier than we are used to but that is a good thing. We had to move some people around and for everybody come in and compete where they did and make our impact, we are really proud of our performance."

King opened the match against the defending champions, losing 31-10 to Oklahoma City. Despite the deficit, the Tornado matched up against the Stars better than any of the opposition. King earned its first points and victory of the day when Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) earned a decision against Kristi Garr in the 109-pound competition. Martin took the match 4-1, 6-0 to bring the Tornado within three points of the Stars before the defending champions began to break away. Alli Ragan (Cardondale, Ill.) earned a victory in her bout against Tessa Plana (4-0, 4-0) before the Stars earned 13 of the next 14 points in their win.

Ragan went undefeated on the day, finishing 6-0 against the competition. She earned 23 points for the Tornado throughout the course of the day, two by decision and three by technical fall.

Martin also went undefeated (6-0) and dominated the competition with four pins in six matches. Martin, ranked first in the nation in the 109-pound weight class, defeated fifth-ranked Michiko Araki via pin to give King a lead against Simon Fraser University that would not be relinquished in their 22-20 victory. She also defeated the number-two ranked grappler in the 109-pound weight class by decision (4-1, 6-0).

Tatiana Perez (El Centro, Cali.) tussled with Opelia Felipe, who is ranked second in the 101-pound weight class, and earned a win by decision (1-1, 2-1) in the team's match versus the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).   

King has been battling injury this off-season and relied on many of its younger talent to step up and other to advance a weight class in order to help the team. Kayla Brendlinger (Slippery Rock, Pa.) and Sara Hildebrandt (Granger, Ind.) competed at the 130-pound level, as opposed to their usual 123. Brendlinger went 5-0 and Hildebrandt went 4-2 with three victories coming by way of a pin. Hildebrandt, ranked eighth in the 123-pound class, defeated fifth-ranked Tessa Ma of Simon Fraser while switching between the 123 and 130-pound levels.

Hanna Martin (El Reno, Okla.) also rose up a weight class, competing at the 136-pound level on Sunday. She went 5-1 on the day, that to Oklahoma City University's Amanda Hendey by decision (4-5, 1-0, 5-2). Martin did earn a victory over a nationally-ranked wrestler, eighth-ranked Beatrice Martinez (OCU Black), by decision (3-0, 2-0).

"The girls that did move up a weight class were challenged today," said Moorman. "They were asked to go out of their element and contribute to the team's success, and they did in a big way."

As a team, King lost its opening bout with the defending national champion Oklahoma City Stars (31-10), but followed with five straight wins. The Tornado defeated Oklahoma City's secondary (Black) team, 34-5, No. 2 in the nation Simon Fraser (22-20), ninth-ranked Wayland Baptist (37-7), third-ranked Cumberlands (35-7) and Wayland Baptist's secondary squad, 40-6.

"We have to evaluate the girls that we had to hold out of the lineup but we'll get back to working on our technique, but it is nice to start off 5-1," said Moorman. "We are going to spend the next few days building on what we have done and focusing on how to get better for our next match."

The Tornado will take to the mats next on Oct. 16 for a meet versus seventh-ranked Missouri Valley College and University of the Cumberlands. The meet will be held at the Student Center Complex.
