BRISTOL, Tenn. - The King College men's and women's tennis teams opened the 2010-11 season Thursday with a pair of 9-0 victories over nearby Emory & Henry (Va.) College in front of a home crowd.
The Tornado and Lady Tornado will welcome Milligan (Tenn.) College to Bristol for a 2 p.m. meeting Saturday.
Both the men's and women's squads swept doubles action to gain control of the matches. The Lady Tornado only lost four games while the men combined for a 24-6 result in doubles.
Newcomer Virginie Brisoschi (Geneva, Switzerland) won at No. 1 singles 6-1 and 6-0 over Savanna Tickle.
Crystal Harwell (Nashville, Tenn.) and Nerece Stoltz (Witbank, South Africa) were 8-0 winners in pro set matches. Harwell and Stoltz teamed up for an 8-1 doubles' victory. Sarah Anderson (Bristol, Tenn.) also won 8-0 at No. 2 singles.
After the three Tornado doubles' points, King secured the match with wins at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. Oriol Mirallas (Barcelona, Spain) was a 7-5 and 6-2 winner at No. 1. Freshman Jose Avila (Cuernavaca, Mexico) won 6-3 and 6-3 while Patrick Jones (Bristol, Tenn.) locked up the win for King after his 6-2 and 6-2 decision at No. 3.
Seth Hale (Knoxville, Tenn.), Eirikur Magnusson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Christopher Harvey (Columbia, S.C.) all won 8-0 from No. 4 to No. 6 singles, respectively.
Last season the Tornado had five 9-0 victories with two by the Lady Tornado.
