Tornado split doubleheader with Warriors

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team split their Conference Carolinas doubleheader Sunday, beating Southern Wesleyan 7-3 in game one before falling 10-4 in the second game.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Warriors scored the first three runs, all of which came in the third inning.
  • In the fourth, Turner Stout started the Tornado with a one-out single, scoring when Amunategui III singled, making it a 3-1 game.
  • King took the lead in the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits, including the inside the park home run by Amunategui III, which allowed Borchardt to score. Borchardt had earlier hit an RBI single, bringing in Levi Medford to score.
  • The Tornado added three more runs in the seventh, including an RBI double by Roper and a two-run home run by Starrs to give King a 7-3 lead, which they would hold onto, not even allowing a baserunner in the final two innings.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • Southern Wesleyan used a two-RBI single in the top of the first to take the early lead.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Roper drew a leadoff walk, before stealing second and advancing to third on a Starrs flyout.
  • Roper then scored on a sacrifice fly by Levi Medford, cutting into the lead.
  • Amunategui III then singled a couple batters later, allowing Borchardt to score the game-tying run.
  • The Warriors then scored three in the second before King scored two runs in the bottom of the frame.
  • After Joe Uribe drew a leadoff walk, he moved around the bases, scoring on a groundout by Patrick Corley, while the next batter, Roper, hit a sacrifice fly to bring King to within 5-4.
  • The Warriors added two more in the top of the third, taking a 7-4 lead.
  • In the top of the seventh, Southern Wesleyan scored three insurance runs on two hits, taking a 10-4 lead.
  • The Tornado got a leadoff base runner in the seventh, but were unable to score, falling 10-4 in the nightcap.
