Tornado battle in five-set loss to Reinhardt

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball fell to Reinhardt after five competitive sets inside the Student Center Complex.
 
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: King 2 – Reinhardt 3 (25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 23-25, 16-18)
LOCATION: Student Center Complex; Bristol, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Reinhardt and King traded points for the beginning of the opening set before the Tornado scored four straight, helped by kills from Justin Sawyer and Grayson Stoudt and an ace from Colton Bueter.
  • King would lead for the remainder of the first set, winning it 25-20. Sawyer, Stoudt, and Bueter each tallied 3 kills. Bueter (2) and Alessandro Fermani (1) had service aces.
  • The Eagles scored the first point in the second set. Both teams were neck-and-neck as the game was tied at 11 with neither team earning more than a 1 point lead. King had a 4-1 run up to the media timeout, taking a 15-12 lead halfway through.
  • The Tornado would maintain the lead and hold off a Reinhardt comeback attempt late in the set. King would take a 2-0 advantage heading into the third set after winning the second set 25-23.
  • Barkley had 4 of King's 10 kills. On the front line, King had a total of 5 blocks with Sean Haberthy getting a solo and two block assists.
  • The Tornado defense started the third set with a block from Haberthy and Bueter. The early part of the set was again close but the Eagles took the lead with five in a row to take a 10-5 lead.
  • King was down by as many as eight points (8-16) before slowly working on a comeback. The Tornado tied the game at 23 before forcing extra points with a kill from Sawyer to tie the game at 24. Unfortunately, that was King's final point of the third set and Reinhardt avoided the sweep.
  • Stoudt and Barkley each had four kills and five more team blocks in the third set.
  • The Eagles scored three straight to start the fourth set. The Tornado would trail for the entirety of the fourth set.
  • King attempted a comeback down 23-19 but the match went into the fifth set with Reinhardt winning the set 25-23.
  • Sawyer had 4 kills while Haberthy had 3 kills, 2 block assists, and a solo block in the fourth set.
  • Barkley started the set with a kill with an assist from JP Ribeiro. Reinhardt scored three in a row to take a 6-3 lead but King returned with a 4-2 run as Reinhardt took a 8-7 lead into the media timeout.
  • Bueter tied the game at 13. King then played catch up as Reinhardt would score before the Tornado matched it. Back-to-back kills from the Eagles ended the game with King falling 16-18 in the final set.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Justin Sawyer and Alex Barkley had double-double performances. Sawyer had 11 kills and a team-high 12 digs. He also had 2 block assists. Barkley had a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs. He had 2 block assists, a solo block and an assist.
  • Colton Bueter had 10 kills and two service aces. He also registers 5 block assists and 52 receptions. Grayson Stoudt also had 10 kills. On the front line he helped King with 4 block assists and a solo block.
  • Sean Haberthy had a game-high 3 solo blocks and game-high 8 block assists on the front line. He also had 7 kills.
  • JP Ribeiro had a team-high 44 assists and an ace.
 
UP NEXT
The King University men's volleyball team will have a non-conference match against Tusculum tomorrow at home. First serve is scheduled for 2 pm.
