Stubbs has record-setting day as Tornado blow past rival LMC

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's soccer team turned in one of the top offensive performances in recent years on Wednesday afternoon against rival Lees-McRae College. The Tornado scored six goals, four from Taylor Stubbs as King topped the Bobcats 6-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lees-McRae struck first in the fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead, but the Tornado responded with three goals in a five-minute stretch.
  • Maggie Danroth assisted on the first two goals, on the first she sent a ball over the defense to Ella Froehlich who beat the goalkeeper to the middle of the goal in the 10th minute.
  • Two minutes later, Danroth took a corner kick and Stubbs found the ball in the middle of the scrum and slid it in to give King the 2-1 lead.
  • In the 15th minute, it was Stubbs that played a ball from the left to the middle of the field to Froehlich. She then placed her shot from 25 yards out into the upper right 90 to extend the King lead.
  • In the 30th minute, Izzy Clark found Stubbs in the middle of the field who flipped a shot over the goalkeeper from 30 yards out that bounced under the crossbar to give King the 4-1 lead.
  • The Tornado added another in the 35th minute as Mackenzie Winters placed the corner kick to the back post where Stubbs flipped the shot inside the crossbar to give King the 5-1 lead at the break.
  • In the 56th minute, Stubbs dribbled down the middle of the field and ripped a shot from 35 yards out that fit under the crossbar to give King a 6-1 lead.
  • The Bobcats responded with goals in the 66th and 67th minutes from Jordan Vaughn and Adrienne Cooper, pulling within 6-3.
  • Lees-McRae continued to press over the final 25 minutes, taking 13 shots and placing three on goal, but all were turned away by Kristal Garcia to give King the 6-3 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • King placed eight of their 10 shots on goal and earned three corner kicks.
  • Stubbs netted four goals and Froehlich added two while Garcia Made eight saves in the contest.
FOR THE FOES
  • Lees-McRae took 28 shots and placed 12 on goal while earning 10 corner kicks.
  • The goal for Cooper was her first of the season.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The six goals for the Tornado is their most since scoring six on October 8, 2016 in a win over the University of Mount Olive.
  • Stubbs doubled her goals on the season and matched the NCAA era school record (since 2010) with four goals in a game. Kara Garrett and Kendyl Baird each accomplished the feat in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
  • Stubbs also tallied nine points on the day, breaking the previous record of eight that was set by Garrett and Baird.

  • King is in action again on Saturday at Barton College. Kickoff from Wilson, N.C. is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
  • Lees-McRae next hosts Young Harris College on Saturday.
