King picks up road win at Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — Coming off a six-day layoff, the King University men's volleyball team picked up a Conference Carolinas win over the Emmanuel College Lions Friday night, 3-1. Joshua Kim finished with 19 kills, while Jack Sarnowski dished out 45 set assists to lead the Tornado.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • The Lions took a 3-2 lead early, but were unable to pull away from the Tornado, who stayed within two points throughout the set.
  • After Emmanuel was able to take a 14-11 lead, King took two straight points, cutting the lead to 14-13.
  • Up 19-17, Emmanuel would score five straight to take a 24-18 lead before JT Deppe recorded a kill, which was quickly followed by Suetonius Harris getting a kill.
  • The Lions would get a kill to end the set, 25-19.
Second Set
  • The second set started off just like the first, with neither team able to pull away, though this time it was the Tornado who held an early lead.
  • The score was tied at 14 when Sarnowski recorded a kill, which would be the first of three straight points that gave the Tornado a 17-14 lead.
  • Coming out of a Lions timeout, Emmanuel scored two straight to get back to within 18-17.
  • That was the point where the Tornado started to pull away, eventually taking a 23-20 lead that forced Emmanuel to take their second timeout.
  • After the timeout, Emmanuel scored a pair of points, but a Deppe kill ended the set, giving King a 25-22 set win.
Third Set
  • King took an early lead in the third set, holding it until the Lions scored three straight to take a 10-9 lead.
  • The Lions would take a 14-12 lead, where Kim would pick up two straight kills before Harris gave King the lead with a kill, making it 15-14.
  • After Emmanuel got a kill to make the score 18-17, the Tornado would score three straight points, with Kim and Harris recording kills.
  • After Emmanuel called timeout, King scored four of the final six points to take the set 25-19.
Fourth Set
  • The set was tied at five when Harris recorded another kill, sparking a run that would see the Tornado take a 13-8 lead.
  • King would use back-to-back attack errors to take a 16-9 lead, forcing Emmanuel to take a timeout.
  • Emmanuel started to make things interesting, fighting back to get within 18-15 before Harris recorded a kill and a service ace to extend the lead to 20-15.
  • The Tornado controlled the set down the stretch, taking a 24-19 lead on a Deppe kill before Emmanuel committed a service error, giving King the set 25-20, and the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kim led all players with 19 kills, along with three blocks and five digs. Harris finished with 18 kills, while Deppe had 10.
  • Sarnowski recorded 45 set assists, along with a season-high seven digs.
  • Aaron Milstead had five blocks while Sean Haberthy had four and Deppe added three.
FOR THE FOES
  • Gustavo Cavalcanti finished with 18 kills for Emmanuel, while Eli Zdonek had 10.
  • Henrik Westhoff had 35 set assists for the Lions.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • The Tornado have now won 12 straight against Emmanuel. The last time that King fell to the Lions was March 4, 2016.
