Tornado top Royals in five

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team needed all five sets to pickup a nonconference win over Queens Saturday, taking the final set 19-17 and the match 3-2. Joshua Kim had 18 kills for the Tornado, while JT Deppe recorded 38 set assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Queens used a 3-0 run to take an early 9-5 run before Aaron Milstead recorded a kill to make it 9-6.
  • The Royals would extend their lead to 18-12, when King scored four of the next five points to get to within 19-16.
  • Queens would score six of the final nine points, with the Tornado getting a kill and a service ace from Suetonius Harris, but the Royals would take the set, 25-19./
Second Set
  • After taking advantage of a pair of Queens errors, Milstead and Jackson Carroll provided back-to-back kills to give the Tornado a 5-2 lead.
  • Queens would use a 5-0 run to take an 11-8 lead before Harris recorded another kill.
  • The Royals were leading 15-10 when Kim picked up a kill, which started a streak where King scored five unanswered points to tie the match at 15.
  • King would eventually tie the set at 20 before taking a 21-20 lead.
  • King was trailing 23-22 when a Royals service error tied the match, setting up the Tornado to take the final two points and the set, 25-23.
Third Set
  • After the Royals took a 6-3 lead, the Tornado scored five straight points, with Kim recording three kills to give King an 8-6 advantage.
  • Queens would come back and take the lead, but back-to-back kills from Diego Marcano and Carroll tied the match at 13.
  • After Queens pulled in front 14-13, King scored three straight points to take a 16-14 lead.
  • King would stretch the lead to 20-17 when the Royals went on a 5-1 run to take a 22-21 lead.
  • The Tornado had multiple set points, including a 27-26 lead, but Queens would score three points to take the set 29-27.
Fourth Set
  • The Tornado raced out to a 6-1 lead, with Kim picking up a service ace and Marcano recording a kill.
  • It was a 12-7 King lead when the Royals began a run of four straight points, getting to within 12-11 before Kim recorded a kill to make it 13-11.
  • The Royals would eventually tie the set at 22 before a service error gave King a narrow 23-22 lead.
  • Queens would get to set point up 26-25 when King started a 3-0 run that would hand them the set 28-26 and send the match to a fifth set.
Fifth Set
  • In the fifth set, the Tornado built an early 4-2 lead before trading points with Queens.
  • The Royals would tie the match at 5 before Kim picked up another kill to take a 6-5 lead.
  • King would take a 10-9 lead before Queens scored two points in a row to take a small lead, though a service error would tie the match at 11.
  • Queens was up 14-12 when Marcano recorded a kill to get King to within one. They would tie the set on an attack error.
  • The Tornado were trailing 17-16 when a service error evened the score. The Tornado would go to set point before Kim ended things with a kill, giving King a 19-17 set win and 3-2 match win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kim had 18 kills, along with eight digs and a pair of aces. Carroll finished with 14 kills, while Marcano had 10.
  • Deppe recorded a season-high 38 set assists, while also picking up a solo block.
  • As a team, the Tornado finished with 58 kills, their third-most of the season.
FOR THE FOES
  • Jack Brinkman had 27 kills for the Royals, while Daniel Leitao had 17, Fletcher Murphy had 12 and Ananias Hayes had 11.
  • Brandon Grabow had a career-high 70 set assists.
UP NEXT
  • The Tornado will return to conference action on Friday when they start a two-match road trip with a matchup against Emmanuel College. They will face Erskine Saturday afternoon to close out the trip.
