King splits doubleheader with Emmanuel

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The King University baseball team split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Emmanuel College Saturday afternoon, using a complete-game shutout from Drew Moore to win 8-0 in the first game of the day.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
  • Robbie Scott had another big day, going 3-for-7 at the plate, with two home runs and six runs batted in during game one.
  • Junior Renwick went 3-for-6 at the plate, with a home run of his own and two RBI while also scoring a pair of runs.
  • Moore threw a complete-game shutout in the first game, allowing one hit and recording four strikeouts while earning his second win of the season.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The game was scoreless in the third, when Truman Roper led off with a single to right center field, advancing to second on a wild pitch.
  • After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Renwick delivered a single up the middle, scoring Roper and moving Zachary Thomas to third.
  • Thomas would score a short time later when Scott hit the first of his two home runs on the day, this one going straight down the left field line, giving King a 3-0 lead.
  • The Tornado struck big in the fifth, thanks to a grand slam from Scott that quickly extended the lead to 7-0.
  • King added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, when Jarrett Backus singled through the left side, allowing Thomas to score.
  • That was plenty for Moore, who only allowed one hit, which came in the top of the fourth.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Tornado struck first in game two, as Preston Steele hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to score Scott and put King up 1-0.
  • Emmanuel scored a run in the top of the third before adding six in the top of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.
  • The Lions added three more in the fifth to extend their lead to 10-1.
  • Renwick hit his first home run of the season in the sixth, a solo shot that made the score 12-2, but it was all King would be able to get.
  • The Tornado got runners to second and third in the ninth, but were unable to capitalize.

FOR THE FOES
  • Khalib Bayona went 3-for-5 on the day, with a home run and a triple along with three runs batted in. The other home run for Emmanuel came off the bat of Anthony Baez.
  • Denham threw six innings in game two, allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.

  • King and Emmanuel will play the third and final game of the series Sunday afternoon, a 9-inning contest scheduled for 1 p.m. at the King Baseball Field.
