King falls in season-opener at Mount Olive

GOLDSBORO, N.C.- The King University women's soccer team opened their season on Monday afternoon and fell to the University of Mount Olive. The teams traded goal in the opening 20 minutes, but the Trojans scored a pair of goals late in the first half as they went on to take the contest 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mount Olive pressured the Tornado early on with a pair shots.
  • The pressure paid off in the 15th minute when Mount Olive was awarded a penalty shot. Jaelyn Brown made the best of the opportunity, giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
  • King countered, however as Mackenzie Winters tallied the equalizer five minutes later.
  • The score remained the same until the 29th minute when Brown found Sarah Berglund who ripped a shot into the back of the net, give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
  • The Tornado deficit grew to 3-1 following another goal from Brown, this one assisted by Berglund in the 38th minute.
  • King came out on the attack early in the second half with Meghan O'Ferral ripping a shot in the 51st minute, however it was turned away.
  • O'Ferral took another shot three minutes later, but that was off target.
  • Mount Olive added another goal in the 81st minute from Samantha Hamrick with the assist going to Makenna Copley as the Trojans took the game 4-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • King took three shots on the day, two from O'Ferral and one from Winters.
  • Lucy Barrientos made five saves in goal for the Tornado.
FOR THE FOES
  • Mount Olive took 16 shots, placing nine on frame.
  • The Trojans also earned five corner kicks.
  • Nicole Solicito posted one save.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Winters scores her first career goal in her first career game.

  • King plays their home-opener on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against Erskine College.
