Balanced attack pushes King past Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The King University women's volleyball team completed their road weekend with a win at Emmanuel College on Saturday morning. The Tornado outlasted the Lions in extra points in the first set. The Lions took the next set before King won the final two sets to take the match 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • A Kayley Holtzclaw kill started a 4-0 run that lifted the Tornado to a 9-7 lead following a Julie Ward kill.
  • Emmanuel came back and evened the score at 16 before using a 6-1 run to open up a 22-17 lead.
  • King responded and came back to even the score at 23, and then scored back-to-back points, the second on a block from Holtzclaw and Allie Zimmerman to take a 25-24 lead.
  • The teams then traded points until the Tornado scored back-to-back points to take the set 29-27.
Second Set
  • Emmanuel jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second set.
  • King tried to get back into the set, but Emmanuel held off the Tornado to take the 25-18 victory.
Third Set
  • King gained some separation in the middle of the third set with back-to-back kills from Zimmerman and Brittney Ramsey.
  • Later in the set, Abigail Shaffer served in an ace that was followed by kills from Abigale Jayne and Holtzclaw.
  • Shaffer then gave King an 18-12 lead with another ace.
  • The Lions tried to make a run, but a Georgia Davis kill gave King the set 25-19.
Fourth Set
  • It was the middle of the set again when the Tornado made their move, starting with a Davis kill.
  • In all, a 5-1 run gave King a 17-12 lead.
  • Ramsey later gave King the 25-19 win with a kill to give the match to King 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ward led King with 10 kills and 14 digs.
  • Holtzclaw followed with nine kills, no errors and an attack percentage of .643.
  • Ramsey and hit .538 with seven kills and five blocks while Jayne posted seven kills and 10 digs.
  • Davis handed out 17 assists to go along with four digs, four kills and three blocks.
  • Katie Harless handed out 19 assists and added eight digs.
  • Abigail Shaffer posted a career-high 21 digs.
FOR THE FOES
  • Hallie Richardson led Emmanuel with 13 kills and 13 digs while Mia Cotton added 11 kills and 15 digs.
  • Alaina Emminger accounted for 10 kills.
  • Gabrielle McGlamery handed out 26 assists while Victoria Alexander registered 22 digs.
UP NEXT
  • King opens Conference Carolinas play on March 3 at North Greenville University. First serve is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
  • Emmanuel is in action again on Tuesday when they host Converse College.
