King drops conference opener at NGU

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The King University women's volleyball team opened Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday night at North Greenville University. Every set was tight, but the Tornado ended up on the short end, falling 3-1 to the Crusaders.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • King jumped out to a 4-2 lead following an Abigale Jayne kill, and the Tornado held the advantage in the early going.
  • North Greenville tried to gain some separation with a 4-2 run near the end of the set to take an 18-16 lead.
  • The Crusaders then scored three straight points and four the final six points to take the set 25-21.
Second Set
  • North Greenville kept the momentum going in the second set, opening up a 5-2 lead as the Crusaders held that advantage in the early going.
  • King worked their way back and evened the score at 10 before a Jayne kill ignited a 7-1 Tornado run.
  • Back-to-back blocks gave King the lead as Georgia Davis and Kayley Holtzclaw teamed up for the first one and Jayne and Holtzclaw accounted for the second stuff.
  • A Davis ace, followed by a Holtzclaw kill gave King a 19-15 advantage and ended the spurt.
  • King held off a late rally, and Julie Ward gave King the 25-22 win with a kill.
Third Set
  • North Greenville held the lead early, and extended their advantage to 11-6 to start the set.
  • King tried to come back, but couldn't get closer than two points as the Crusaders took the set 25-20.
Fourth Set
  • King again found themselves playing from behind early on as North Greenville opened up a 4-1 lead early.
  • The Tornado fought back and evened the tally at eight and later took a 12-11 lead following a Brittney Ramsey kill.
  • However, North Greenville regained the lead with three straight points.
  • King came back again, evening the score at 18, and again at 22, but the Crusaders scored the final three points to take the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ward posted a double-double, leading King with 12 kills to go along with 11 digs.
  • Holtzclaw followed with seven kills and four blocks.
  • Davis handed out 20 assists, added three blocks, three digs and four kills.
  • Katie Harless handed out 18 assists and accounted for five digs.
  • Abigail Shaffer led the back row with 19 digs.
FOR THE FOES
  • Kelli Davis led North Greenville with 14 kills and 12 digs.
  • Erin Allen added 13 kills.
  • Whitley Kahler registered 16 digs.
  • Ashlyn Conner handed out 24 assists and added seven digs while Abby Pyke handed out 23 assists.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The double-double for Ward is her third of the season and third in as many matches.
UP NEXT
  • King is in action again on Friday when they travel to Barton College. First serve from Wilson, N.C. is slated for 4:30 p.m.
  • North Greenville hosts Chowan University on Friday night.
