MACON, France – King University women's wrestler Marina Doi competed for the United States at the Junior World Championships and reached the quarterfinals before her tournament ended. She won her first match before falling in the second match.
Doi defeated Obed Perez Solis of Mexico on a 10-0 technical fall in her first match at 44 kilograms. She then faced Veronika Gurskaya of Russia in the quarterfinals and dropped a tight 5-3 decision. Gurskaya then fell in the semifinals, ending Doi's tournament.
"I feel that I definitely wrestled a lot better than last year," Doi said. "Everybody knows that I am undersized for this weight class, and [Gurskaya] was especially big. I mean, I can't use it as an excuse. I've been wrestling people bigger my whole life. I should have changed my attacks up."
