Augello named to InterMat Freshman of the Year list
BRISTOL, Tenn. – In her first season in Scarlet and Navy, King University women's wrestler Haley Augello was nothing short of impressive, capturing her first WCWA National Championship in January. Earlier this week, Augello was listed fifth on the 2014 InterMat list of National Freshman of the Year, a list that eight men's NCAA Division I wrestlers and an NCAA Division III men's wrestler, making Augello the only female to make the list.
Augello was the only woman named to the 2014 InterMat Freshman of the Year list that is comprised of 10 wrestlers nationally. Augello earned 10 votes, and was one of four wrestlers to receive a first place vote in the poll that is conducted by writers and executives of InterMatWrestle.com. In addition, she was one of only two non-NCAA Division I wrestlers to receive a vote (Riley Lefever, Wabash), and was the only non-NCAA wrestler to receive a vote in the poll.
"Haley receiving these votes is awesome, she's such a hard worker and deserves the recognition," head coach Jason Moorman said. "I think it's also great for collegiate women's wrestling as the sport continues to grow."
The Lockport, Ill., native didn't allow many points to be scored on her this season en route to the WCWA (Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association) national title at the 116 pound weight class. Augello posted a perfect 13-0 record, taking 12 victories by technical fall and the final win, the first of her career on a pin in only 32 seconds. Only a freshman, Augello helped lead the Tornado to a pair of firsts in 2013-14, winning their first WCWA National Title and taking their first NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches' Association) Duals title two weeks prior.
