Tornado top WCWA preseason poll

BRISTOL, Tenn. – For the second consecutive year, the King University women's wrestling team sits atop the Women's College Wrestling Association's preseason poll. The Tornado narrowly edged out last year's national runner-up Oklahoma City University for the top spot in the poll.

The Tornado received 111 points in the poll to top Oklahoma City's 104 points. Defending national champion Simon Fraser University came in third with 90 points. This marks the second consecutive season the Tornado have topped the WCWA preseason poll. King took home a third place finish from WCWA Nationals a season ago.

Not only are the Tornado ranked No. 1, but three individuals are ranked atop their respective weight classes to start the season. Senior Alli Ragan ranked first in the 136 pound weight class while juniors Sarah Hildebrandt and Julia Salata sit atop the 123 and 155 pound weight classes, respectively.

Along with that trio, 15 other wrestlers were ranked in the top-10 of their weight classes. Shannon Constantine (3rd), Ashley Iliff (5th) and Alesha Zappitella (9th) are in the top-10 in the 101 pound weight class while freshman Haley Augello ranks eighth at 109 pounds.

The Tornado have four wrestlers ranked in the 116 pound weight class, led by junior Kayla Brendlinger who is ranked second. Samantha Klingel (3rd) and Marina Sanchez (7th) are also ranked.

Freshman Megan Black is eighth in the 130 pound weight class while junior Stacy Martin joins Ragan at 136 pounds with her eighth place ranking. At 143 pounds, Amanda Hendey is ranked third and Sarah Saenz is ninth while Jacqueline Williams joins Salata in the 155 pound weight class at eighth.

The Tornado have two wrestlers ranked at 170 pounds, Lorrie Ramos is ranked third and Kerri Bumpers is seventh. Malexis McAdoo rounds out the group of 19 ranked wrestlers as she is ranked fourth at the 190 pound weight class.

The Tornado open the 2013-14 season at the Cliff Keen Duals on October 25-26. The duals will take place in Oklahoma City, Okla.
