Lady Tornado Finish Third at NWCA/Cliff Keen Nationals

King Women's Wrestling defeated Missouri Valley in the consolation round of the Women's division to take third place.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – After splitting their first two dual matches of the tournament the King Lady Tornado women's wrestling team decisively defeated Missouri Valley College for a third place finish at the 2013 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Alli Ragan and Julia Salata led a host of Lady Tornado grapplers that finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.

King battled Missouri Valley College for rights to third place of the Nationals Duals and ruled the latter weight classes en route to the win. With a 13-7 lead in hand, Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) began a run of five consecutive victories with a 3-0, 2-1 decision over Randi Beltz at 136. In her first match of the season, sophomore Amanda Hendey (Beaumont, Calif.) took a decision win over Frances Efiong (1-1, 5-1). The Lady Tornado held the Vikings scoreless over the last three bouts of the dual with wins by Julia Salata (Canton, Mich.), freshman Jackie Williams (Whittier, Calif.), and Lorrie Ramos (Orlando, Fla.). All three shut out their opponents and helped King to a 28-9 win for third place.

The Lady Tornado came into the tournament ranked second in the bracket and was paired with Wayland Baptist to open the tournament. King rolled to a 28-14 victory with wins in five of their first six bouts of the dual. Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) and Kayla Bartosch (Triangle, Va.) both registered technical falls over their opponents while Alli Ragan pinned Erin Miller 42 seconds before Wayland Baptist earned its next points. King won two of the final three bouts with Lorrie Ramos recording a second-period pin over Jeneshia Woods.

Their lone loss came to the eventual tournament champion, Simon Fraiser University. The Clan came out with victories in their first three bouts to take an 11-1 lead before Kayla Brendlinger (126 lbs.) and Katarina Perez (130 lbs.) cut the deficit to two points. Brendlinger's win came by pin over Laura Wilson in the first period. Simon Fraiser rattled off wins in the final five bouts to seal a 27-13 victory, placing King in the consolation championship.

Alli Ragan, Julia Salata, Kayla Bartosch, Lorrie Ramos, and Shannon Constantine all finished 2-1 after the weekend. Amanda Hendey finished 1-1 in her return to the lineup. Defending WCWA National Champion Emily Martin went unblemished in two bouts.

King's next action will be on Jan. 25-26 when they serve as hosts for the 2013 WCWA Nationals. The two-day tournament serves as the national championships for the governing body of women's collegiate wrestling. All matches over that time will be held in the Student Center Complex.
