Three Crowned Champs at Body Bar Championships, Three Take Second

LAKELAND, Fla. – Alli Ragan defended her Body Bar Wrestling Championship title and was joined by two teammates that took titles in their respective weight classes at this weekend's tournament held in Lakeland, Fla. Sarah Hildebrandt and Julia Salata earned titles while three Lady Tornado wrestlers earned second place. King will have six student-athletes represent the United States at the Junior World Championships and Pan-Am Junior World Championships this summer as a result of the weekend's showing.

Rising sophomore Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) defended her title in the 63-kilogram division by defeating freshman teammate Krista Revelle (Meriden, Kan.) in the final of their bracket. Ragan earned a bye all the way to the final bout by virtue of her bronze medal placing at the 2011 Junior World Championships. After battling her way through two tough decision wins in pool play, Revelle and Ragan met in the championship bout.

In the best-of-three series, Ragan earned two straight victories by narrow margins to earn the Body Bar Women's 63kg Championship. Ragan outlasted Revelle with a 1-0, 1-1 victory in the first of two matches before downing the freshman 3-0, 1-0 in the decisive bout for the title.

Sarah Hildebrandt (Granger, Ind.) took first place in the 55 kg weight class by sweeping through pool play with a perfect 4-0 record followed by defeating Rachel McFarland (Gator Wrestling Club) in the title bout. The freshman won all four pool play matches by decision and only surrendered points in one period in nine she wrestled in. She shut out three of her four pool play opponents by a combined score of 15-0 before advancing to the championship match and taking consecutive matches over McFarland.

Julia Salata (Canton, Mich.) earned the last of the three titles King acquired over the weekend. After advancing to the title match with three wins in pool play of the 72 kg bracket, Salata battled through the best-of-three series with Brittany David (Lindenwood) for the title. Salata fell behind with a first bout loss (3-1, 1-3, 3-3) but rallied to take the final two to steal the title. Salata earned a pair of one-point victories in the middle bout (1-0, 2-1) and then capped off her run to the championship with a 2-0, 4-2 win.

In addition to Revelle's second place finish in the 63 kg division, two more King grapplers earned second place honors in their respective weight classes and will represent the U.S. at the Junior Pan-Am Championships as a result.

In the 51-kilogram class, Kayla Bartosch (Triangle, Va.) took second with a 3-0 pool play record, including pins over Marina Sanchez (SD Hot Beaches) and Haley Moreno (Azle) to place her in the finals bout with Haley Augekio (NYAC). Bartosch lost in the finals in two matches.

Newcomer Amanda Hendey (Beaumont, Calif.) dominated pool play in the 67 kg division with pins over each of her four opponents to guide her into the title round. Two of her four pins were within the first minute of the opening period and all four pins were completed within 1:30 of the match. In the title bout, Hendey lost in two to Oklahoma City University's Jennifer Page after being edge 1-0, 1-0 in the first match and then being pinned in the second period of the next bout.

All thirteen wrestlers placed during this weekend's Body Bar Women's Championships with 12 finishing top-5 or better in their respective weight classes. Katarina Perez (El Centro, Calif.) rolled through her first three matches with consecutive pins to open up her day and finished 4-1 in 59 kg pool play en route to a third place finish. Lorrie Ramos (Orlando, Fla.) and Samantha Klingel (Kresgeville, Pa.) also finished third in the 67 kg and 51 kg divisions, respectively.

"King was well represented this weekend," said Head Coach Jason Moorman. "I'm very proud of all the work we put in to get to this point. It took all of their [the team] experiences this year and a special commitment from [assistant coach] Jackie Stiles for the team to get this far and achieve these goals. What is next will be a great experience for all of them."

Julia Salata, Alli Ragan, Sarah Hildebrandt each earned the right to represent the United States at the World Junior Championships. Ragan will make her second consecutive appearance at the event after winning the bronze medal at last year's championships while Salata and Hildebrandt each make their first showing. The Junior Championships will be held on Sept. 4-9 in Pattaya, Thailand.

The three second-place finishers (Bartosch, Revelle, Hendey) will represent the United States on the Pan American Junior Team that will compete June 6-10 in Guatemala.
