Ragan Takes Championship at NYAC Open to Qualify for Olympic Trials

NEW YORK, N.Y. – New York City hosted one of the most prestigious wrestling opens this weekend, bring in some of the most elite male and female wrestlers from around the world to compete against one another. Sophomore Alli Ragan defeated one of the nation's best on her way to winning the championship in her weight class, automatically granting her entry into the Olympic Trials in April 2012. King was well represented across the board at the open throughout the seven available weight classes.

Ragan began her run to the title at 138 pounds (63 kg) by shutting out Lauren Louive (Cumberlands), 4-0 and 5-0. She then disposed of Erin Clodgo (Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club) by decision in a three-period bout (1-1, 0-1, 2-1) setting up a match pitting the number one and two wrestlers in the nation at 138 pounds. No. 1 Kristie Davis (Oklahoma City University) made her mark on the women's wrestling world as a nine-time world medalist and two-time World Champion in her storied career. Davis had won her previous bout in the Open to set up a semifinal match with Ragan. It took three periods but Ragan defeated the top grappler, coming back from dropping the opening period by two points (0-2, 3-2, 1-0). The win advanced Ragan to the championship round where she defeated her second member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club, Trinity Plessinger, by decision (4-1, 2-5, 1-0).

The championship grants Ragan an automatic bid to participate in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, held April 20-21, 2012 in Iowa City, Iowa. The Carbondale, Ill. native was also named Outstanding Wrestler at the Open, a significant honor to take away from one of the top tournaments in the sport.

"She is really working to get better every day," said Head Coach Jason Moorman. "She won a lot of her matches in three periods today which showed she can make the necessary adjustments to win as well as her maturity in her journey to becoming a top wrestler."

Julie Salata (Canton, Mich.) took second place in the 147-pound weight division, falling in the championship bout to Adeline Gray (NYAC). Salata won her first two matches by pin and was only one of eight wrestlers in the entire tournament to record multiple pins in their stay. Her total time of her two pins was also the second fastest among those with multiple pins at 1:16.

Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) had a noteworthy appearance at the Open, finishing 2-2 overall but competing against some of the top competition the globe has to offer. Her two loses came at the hands of Carolina Castillo Hidalgo, who placed fifth at the Senior World Championships in 2010-11, and three-time World Champion from Japan,  Miyuu Yamamoto. Her third bout resulted in a win by fall over Alyssa Lampe, a former member of the U.S. World Team.

Also picking up wins for King were Kayla Brendlinger (Slippery Rock, Pa.), Lorrie Ramos (Orlando, Fla.) and Amber Floyd (Rialto, Cali.).

"We are a young team but we want to expose our wrestlers to the top competition," said Moorman. "Our goals are always to keep growing and keep moving forward in our progress. We understand that it is a process to get better but we want them to be competitive and be challenged to succeed. I am really proud of everyone that competed today. They were all going hard after wins in every bout and represented King [College] very well."

King will compete next at the Harry Geris Duals on Nov. 19 in London, Ontario.
