Lady Tornado wrestles to second at Cumberlands Duals

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The King College women's wrestling team picked up a second-place finish at the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Duals Saturday.

King opened the event with a 29-19 win over host Cumberlands. After giving up a forfeit at 44-kilograms, Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) got the Lady Tornado on the board with a fall over Jessica Nguyen in the 48-kilogram match.  Cumberlands got a pin at 51 kilograms, but King answered when Hanna Martin (Oklahoma City, Okla.) won a decision over Kerstin Harmon at 55 kilograms. Haylee Childs (Lakeland, Fla.) added a fall over Breisja Macera at 59 kilograms. Cumberlands got another decision before Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) bumped up to defeat Christen Paysse by pin at 67 kilograms. Amber Floyd (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) followed with a pin over Megan Agajanian at 72 kilograms, and Marina Lambert (Chesapeake, Va.) closed the dual out with a fall over Lakia Henderson in the 90 kilogram weight class.

The win over Cumberlands was the third of the season for King.

Next for King was a 33-11 win over Missouri Baptist. The Lady Tornado had five victories via forfeits combined with wins from Childs, Ragan and Lambert.

The victory sent the Lady Tornado to the championship to face perennial national power Oklahoma City University. Martin revenged an earlier season loss defeating Nicole Woody 3-0, 1-0.  King battled tough to scrap points together with the next win in the match coming from Lambert over Karon Scott 4-0 and 6-0 in the 90 kilogram match.

"We had some adversity giving up two forfeits today, and I was very proud of how our ladies responded," King head coach Jason Moorman said. "Overall, I feel like mentally we are getting to where we need to be, but we have a lot of work to do."

Next for King a home date on Jan. 15 against Oklahoma City and Missouri Valley.

The Lady Tornado wrapped up the first part of the schedule with a dual record of 8-3. All three of the losses were from Oklahoma City.
