King Women’s Volleyball Tabbed to Finish Fourth in Preseason Poll

The Lady Tornado look to surpass expectations a second straight season after being voted to finish fourth in Monday's Conference Carolinas Coaches' Preseason Poll.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – In Monday's 2012 Conference Carolinas Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Lady Tornado women's volleyball team was picked to finish fourth of 12 teams. The announcement comes a year removed from a banner year where King achieved its first Conference Carolinas and NCAA Division II postseason victory.

Lees-McRae topped the poll narrowly over Queens (N.C.), with both programs receiving six first place votes.  Erskine was picked third followed by King and Limestone to round out the top-five.  Selected to finish sixth through tenth, respectively, was Belmont Abbey, Mount Olive, Pfeiffer, Coker, and North Greenville while Barton and Converse wrapped up the poll.  The Conference Carolinas defending champion Bobcats went 18-0 in league play last season and defeated Queens in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship.

Last season was historic for the Lady Tornado as their victory in the quarterfinal match against Mount Olive was the institution's first win in Conference Carolinas postseason play.  The Lady Tornado also had a 13-5 conference record in the regular season.

Three members of the 2011 team garnered All-Conference honors.  Recent graduate Ashley Pittman attained First Team honors behind a league-leading 478 kills for the season while Sarah Van Goethem and Shannon Earwood were named to the Second Team. The 2012 squad has six returners from last year's team including defensive specialist Payton Tipton, who averaged a team-high 3.12 digs per set in 2011.  Kelsey Griffitts is the leading returner in kills after posting 1.74 kills per set last season.  Jordan Baty also helped King's attack last season, averaging 1.52 kills per set, while team captain and veteran outside hitter Mariah Herrington will also contribute on the front line.  Nine newcomers will join the team for the upcoming season including seven freshman and two transfers.

The Lady Tornado will kick off the 2012 campaign at the Fairmont State Tournament in Fairmont, W.Va. against Pitt.-Johnstown on Friday, Aug. 31 at 11:00 a.m.
