Lady Tornado splits Friday pool play contests at NCCAA

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - King College went 1-1 on Friday to close out pool play at the NCCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship. The Lady Tornado upended No. 2 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University 3-0, but lost to No. 6 Trinity Christian (Ill.) College with a similar 3-0 score.

King, the event's No. 7 seed, needs help to reach Saturday's semifinal round. King finished pool play at 2-2. No. 3 and defending national champion Campbellsville (Ky.) University has a 3-0 record and one more match left in pool play against Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon has a 1-2 record at the moment. Trinity Christian has a 2-1 record with one match to go, a 6 p.m. meeting against No. 10 Southeastern (Fla.) University, winless in three contest so far. A Mount Vernon victory over Campbellsville and Southeastern win against Trinity Christian would force a three-way tie for second in the pool between King, Trinity Christian and Mount Vernon. Campbellsville has a spot in the semifinals locked up.

The Lady Tornado, now at 32-11, used set scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-23 for the victory over Mount Vernon. King was close in the Trinity Christian contest, but ended up on the short side 25-23, 25-22 and 25-23. Trinity Christian has a 30-9 record with the one pool play match left.

This marks the second straight season King defeated Mount Vernon in pool play at the NCCAA. The Lady Tornado won 26-24, 24-26, 25-22, 18-25 and 15-13 in last year's meeting over the 2009 NCCAA Nationals top seed.

Mount Vernon was swept for just the third time this season and lost back-to-back matches for the first time in 2010. Mount Vernon had not lost two straight matches since last October.
