King starts indoor track and field season with strong performances at App Open

BOONE, N.C. - King College opened the 2011 indoor track and field season Saturday at the Appalachian Open with numerous Top-5 finishes.

Naseem Haje (Hagerstown, Md.) ran to second place in the 5,000-meter after crossing the finish line in 16 minutes and 12 seconds. Spencer Frantom (Morristown, Tenn.) followed in fourth with a run of 16:32.

Carrie Nelson (Independence, Va.) used a time of 19:10 to finish third in the 5,000 while teammate Hannah Witt (Mountain City, Tenn.) finished a second behind her.

The Tornado's 1,600 relay team needed 3:23.88 to finish the race, good enough for third.

Earl Rahming (Nassau, Bahamas) and his time of 49.77 seconds in the 400 put the freshman in fifth.

Justin Harris (Johnson City, Tenn.) also added a strong performance in the weight throw of 32 feet and one inch.

Ashley Ruth (Cleveland, Tenn.) ran the 400 in 1:04.36 while Shontella Smith (Campobello, S.C.) cleared 33 feet and 6 inches in her triple jump debut.

Next for King will be the Liberty Open in Lynchburg, Va., next weekend.
