Tornado fall at Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. –Playing their third match in as many days, and second straight day on the road, the King University women's tennis team ran out of gas on Sunday at Newberry College. The Wolves took the nonconference dual from the Tornado 9-0.
Newberry (15-7) set the tone early in doubles play, taking the No. 1 match 8-2, and followed that with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. The Wolves extended their lead to 3-0 when their No. 2 doubles team of Vanessa Ortiz and Marina Ziehe defeated Mariana Hosomi and Naomi Reyes 8-5.
It was more of the same in singles play for the Wolves, however, King (7-13) made things interesting in the fifth and sixth flights. Claudia Morris dropped a tight 6-4, 6-4 decision to Ziehe at No. 5 singles and Haley Maloney fell in three sets to Shannon McManus. Maloney took the first set 7-5, but McManus responded with a 6-1 win before taking the match with a 10-1 victory in the final set.
The Tornado will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Converse College. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
