Tornado take 5-4 win over Lees-McRae

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's tennis team snapped a two-match losing skid on Tuesday, defeating Conference Carolinas foe Lees-McRae College 5-4 in its first competition in 10 days.

The Tornado (7-8, 2-3 Conference Carolinas) opened play by winning two of three doubles matches. No. 1 doubles was the lone casualty for King, as Mariana Hosomi and Naomi Reyes scored an 8-3 victory at the second flight. Claudia Morris and Haley Moloney won their No. 3 doubles match by an identical score.

King picked up wins in half of its six singles matches to claim the overall victory. Mariana Hosomi took a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the third flight, while Alyssa Salazar claimed a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles. Haley Moloney defeated her Bobcat counterpart 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

The Tornado also suffered a pair of losses in tight matches. Katya Cerny fell at No. 1 singles to Lees-McRae's (1-9, 0-3 Conference Carolinas) Samantha Wholers 6-4 in the first set before rebounding to take the second set 7-6 (7-4). Wholers was able to respond, however, and earn a Bobcats point with a 6-1 win in the third set. Claudia Morris took the Bobcats' Amanda Chapman to three sets before falling 10-7 in the third at No. 6 singles. Hillary Lutz bested King's Naomi Reyes 6-0, 6-1 at the second flight.
