BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – In their first dual match of the season, the King University turned in a road victory over Bluefield State College. The Tornado won all three doubles matches before taking the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles matches for their first victory of the year.
Freshmen Katya Cerny and Ashley Salazar turned in an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles to get the day started. Naomi Reyes and partner Alyssa Salazar followed suit with an 8-6 win at the No. 2 flight while Claudia Morris and Haley Maloney made it clean sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Ashley Salazar won the first set 6-1 over Marijana Giorgievska at No. 1 singles, before dropping the second set 6-4. However, she rebounded to take the final set 10-3 for the victory. Reyes posted a straight sets win at No. 2 singles, topping Isabella Cubillos 6-1, 6-2. Maloney took King's final win of the day at No. 6 singles, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-1 to give the Tornado the 6-3 win.
King will be in action again on Friday when they travel to Johnson City to face East Tennessee State University and Tusculum College. The Tornado will face ETSU at 8:00 a.m., and Tusculum at 3:30 p.m.
