GREENVILLE, S.C. - King College had the NCCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week award winners with Virginie Brioschi winning the women's honor and Jose Avila took the men's award.
Brioschi, a freshman from Geneva, Switzerland, went 4-0 in King's two matches on the week with all of her wins coming at No. 1. She started with teammate Nerece Stoltz (Witbank, South Africa) for an 8-1 win over Bridgewater (Va.) College's No. 1 duo. Later in the day she defeated Katie Gordon 6-1 and 6-1 to help King to a 5-2 match win.
At Tusculum (Tenn.) College Brioschi and Stoltz helped King to a 2-1 lead after doubles with another 8-1 No. 1 doubles' point. In singles' action she won 6-2, 1-6 (10-5) which turned out to be the Lady Tornado's only singles' point of the match.
Avila (Cuernavaca, Mexico) went 4-0 on the week in the Tornado's two matches with all the wins coming at No. 1. The freshman started with a doubles' victory with Patrick Jones (Bristol, Tenn.) 8-3 over Bridgewater (Va.) College's No. 1 duo. Avila followed that with a 6-3 and 6-0 singles' win over Peter Hawkins.
On Friday Avila teamed up with Jones for another win, this time at Tusculum (Tenn.) College with an 8-5 score over the Pioneers' No. 1 duo. To end the week Avila posted a dominate 6-0 and 6-1 win over Tusculum's No. 1 player.
He extended his winning streak in singles' play to five straight with a combined margin with only 12 games lost in the 10 sets.
The Tornado owns a record of 8-4 while the Lady Tornado holds a 6-6 record.
This is the sixth time a member of the Tornado squad has won the award. King also swept the awards a week ago with Stoltz the honoree from the women's team and Pablo Vidal (Madrid, Spain) taking the men's award.
Next on the schedule for King will be a trip for the women to play future Conference Carolinas foe Converse (S.C.) College March 16 at 2:30 p.m. The Tornado returns to action March 17 at NCAA Division I foe UNC Asheville.
