BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University freshman Nicole Maldonado has been named the Appalachian Swimming Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week after her best personal performance of the season in a dual meet against Emory & Henry College on Friday night.
Maldonado won three events in Friday's meet, capturing the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 24.68 and 55.42, respectively. She would go on to lead off the winning 400 freestyle relay with a split of 54.98 en route to a school record time of 3:48.52. Her time in the 50 freestyle was just .03 seconds from the current school record in the event and is the top-ranked time in the ASC this season. She is also the No. 1 ranked swimmer in the conference in the 100 free with a top time of 54.18.
The early portion of the season has been impressive for the San Juan, Puerto Rico native. She won the 100 and 200 freestyle events in a dual meet with Milligan College in October, then followed up that performance by setting a school record in the 200 freestyle in King's next meet against Emmanuel College. Her season has also included a win in the 50 free at the Sewanee Invitational.
Maldonado and the Tornado will next compete on Friday night against visiting Warren Wilson College. The meet will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Virginia High School in Bristol, Va.
