MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill Lions defeated King Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving in Saturday's dual meet by a combined score of 192-47. King was led by Kelsey Wiese and Rachel Fuller who both earned two individual victories, Saturday afternoon.
Kelsey Wiese, a junior from Gallatin, Tenn., earned victories in the 100-yard backstroke and the 50 free events. In the 100 back, she clocked in a time five seconds faster than the second-place finisher, touching the wall in 1:03.09. In the 50 free, she edged out Taylor Bugg by 0.59 second for the win (26.43).
Freshman Rachel Fuller (North Augusta, S.C.) ruled the fly events with wins in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard butterfly. In the 200, she was over three seconds faster than Elle Grier, finished first with a time of 2:26.96. Her 100 fly time of 1:06.50 earned her second individual victory of the day, again logging in a time more than three seconds faster than the next nearest finisher.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Kelsey Copeland, Wiese, Sara Hennies, and Fuller were narrowly edged out by Mars Hill by 0.41, good for a second-place finish in the event. Shirley Langford placed second in the 100 breast (1:19.01).
Despite the success by Fuller and Wiese, the Lady Tornado fell to the Lions, 90-31.
The men were also on the losing side of their dual with Mars Hill, falling 102-16. Reynold Thibideau (Titusville, Fla.) placed second in the 100 back (59.65), finishing 0.74 behind the event winner from MHC. He also took second in the 200-yard IM (2:10.20). Also earning second-place honors was Christopher Nochowicz in the 500 free (5:43.18).
Both Tornado teams will be back in action on Jan. 26 when they go to Union College for a 4 p.m. dual meet.
