Swim Teams Earn First Wins on Senior Day
The men's team won by a wide margin in their first team victory of the season, 126-52. The Tornado won their first four events, three of them individual events. They won a total of 12 out of 15 events, highlighted by senior Wayne Oliver (Bristol, Tenn.) winning three individual events and serving as the last leg of the winning the 200-yard medley relay. Oliver won the 50-yard freestyle (27.71) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.68).
Sophomore Chirstopher Nochowicz (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) was a part of four victories, two individually and two as part of a relay. Nochowicz was a part of the winning 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relay teams while pulling down wins in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.61) and 200-yard backstroke (2:14.45).
The women edged out a win over Warren Wilson, 115-114. The Tornado were down 104-110 coming into the last event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Kelsey Wiese, Kelsey Copeland, Malorie McBride and Jade Schroeder not only made up the ground but won the event by 10 seconds to earn 11 points and pull out the meet win. Wiese separated her team from Warren Wilson's 'A' team with the fastest of the four legs of the race (26.07) in the final stretch and to help beat the opposition by more than four seconds.
Copeland (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) also won the 50-yard freestyle (27.71) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:30.12) in addition to the relay victory. Shirley Langford (Cape Coral, Fla.) won three events with victories in the 200-yard IM (2:38.12), 200-yard breaststroke (2:52.72) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:20.26).
The King men's team will participate in two additional dual meets before the start of the Appalachian Swimming Conference Championships. The Tornado will head to Milligan, N.C. to swim against the Buffaloes and Berry College on Feb. 3 and follow it up the following day at Union College (Bourbonville, Ky.). The women's team will follow the same schedule but swim one more time on Jan. 26 against Limestone College and Converse College in Gaffney, South Carolina.
