BRISTOL, Tenn. – For the second time this season, Freek Schoones of the men's soccer team has earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Offensive Player of the Week. Tornado women's soccer player Miranda Smith garnered ECAC Offensive Player of the Week also earned recognition for her performance this week.
Schoones posted his first career hat trick, leading King to a 3-0 start in Conference Carolinas play when they defeated North Greenville on Saturday. The senior scored the first two goals in the first 16 minutes to put King ahead, and added another goal in the 31st minute, giving him four on the season. On the first goal he picked off a pass and flipped a shot over the keeper, the second one he ripped a shot from the top of the box into the middle of the net, and the third goal was scored on a penalty kick. The Beek en Donk, Netherlands native also earned ECAC Offensive Player of the Week honors on September 13.
Smith helped lead King to a Conference Carolinas win, scoring two goals and handing out two assists in a win over North Greenville. The Soddy Daisy, Tenn., native assisted on the first two goals to put King ahead before putting the game away with the final two goals in the second half. For the fourth time of her career and first time this season, the junior tallied more than one goal in a contest. Smith leads the league with four assists and ranks third with four goals this season. This marks the first time Smith has earned a weekly award from the ECAC.
The Tornado will be in action again on Wednesday when they travel to Carson-Newman University for a doubleheader. The women kickoff against the Eagles at 5:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
