Steger Hits Game Winner, Lawson Pitches Shutout in 1-0 Win
BRISTOL, Tenn. – King Women's Soccer kept their playoff hopes alive facing a must-win match against the Erskine Flying Fleet. The Lady Tornado answered the call with a 1-0 victory over the Fleet behind a goal from Heidi Steger and Morgan Lawson's second straight shutout performance. They are now 4-6-2 overall and 3-5-2 in league play.
Heidi Steger (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored the eventual game-winning goal late in the first half after a shift of momentum went the Lady Tornado's way. For nearly eight minutes prior to the goal being scored, King had possession of the ball and put the pressure on Erskine goalkeeper Katie Lyle. King put together a trio of shots that missed their mark.
Steger made the difference with a long feed down the right side from Kendyl Baird (Boone, N.C.) that the senior dribbled just inside the box. Steger then laid up a chip shot that flew over Lyle's head and into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.

The goal prompted a change in goal for the Fleet, where they inserted Ashton Burgess between the posts for the duration of the match.
Morgan Lawson (Goodview, Va.) one upped her counterparts between the post as the freshman went a perfect 8-for-8 on save attempts. She made four saves in each period to pitch her second straight shutout and earn her first collegiate victory. On Oct. 13, Lawson made 10 saves against Pfeiffer in a nil-nil draw where she picked up her first points as a keeper with King.
The win moves King into the playoff picture where they are now seventh overall in the team standings and possess a 3-5-2 (11 pts) Conference Carolinas record. They have one more league contest to play while Erskine and Converse have two league matches left to play and trail King by three and four points, respectively. Barton trails King by three points and has one match to play. King and Barton each will play the current conference leader, Lees-McRae.
King's next action will be at Concord University on Friday, Oct. 19. Kickoff will be at 4 p.m. The Lady Tornado will conclude their Conference Carolinas slate on Oct. 23 with a match against Lees-McRae in Banner Elk, N.C.
