Lady Tornado Picked Seventh in Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Poll

King College was tabbed to finish seventh in Conference Carolinas, according to the recently released Coaches' Poll.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The 2012 Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll was recently released by the Conference Carolinas office and has King picked to finish seventh in 2012. Lees-McRae College was picked as the favorite to finish atop the conference.

King received 61 total points in the league preseason poll that is voted on by all 12 women's soccer coaches. After Queens (N.C.) earned the six spot and one first place vote, King jumped ahead of Erskine (51 points), North Greenville (41), Converse (27), Coker (26), and Barton (20) in the poll. Defending Conference Carolinas Tournament Champion Lees-McRae earned six first place votes to edge out Limestone (105) by five points for the first place position.

Last year, King was picked to finish eighth of 12 teams and surprised many when they earned the No. 5 seed with an 8-8-1 overall record and a 7-4-1 Conference Carolinas mark. Recent graduate Morgan Shelton helped lead the Lady Tornado toward their first playoff berth as a NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas member with her team-leading 14 goals, five assists, and 33 points before earning All-Conference and All-Region honors.

The Lady Tornado went 4-1-1 in their last six contests of the regular season, propelling them into the postseason. Behind All-Conference goalkeeper Abbey Kitts, King allowed only five goals and pitched three shutouts in their late-season run.

The 2011 season featured Lees-McRae upsetting preseason favorite Belmont Abbey College for the conference championship. The Bobcats finished with an 11-1 overall mark and ran through opposition in the postseason tournament prior to a first round exit at the 2011 NCAA Regional Tournament.

King begins its season on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Young Harris at 4 p.m. The 2012 home opener will be held at Parks Field against Brevard College on Sept. 5 with a 4 p.m. start time.
