BRISTOL, Tenn. - King College broke into the win column Saturday as the Lady Tornado soccer squad earned a 4-1 victory over visiting Young Harris (Ga.) College that included a pair of goals by Hannah Shankle.
King went to 1-6 on the season as Young Harris left with a 3-3-1 record.
Shankle (Bristol, Va.) scored her goals in the first half, the go-ahead and an insurance score. The first Shankle goal was off a rebound in the 25th minute. She then scored 10 minutes later from the right side and got an assist from Abigail Shankle (Bristol, Va.).
King tied the contest at 1-1 when Maggie Lynskey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) put home her first goal of the season as the ball was in front of the net at the 19:43 mark. She had a shot seconds earlier and then scored on the deflection.
The only score of the second half was when Morgan Shelton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) booted home a goal in the 83rd minute. Her goal was the first time King scored in the final half of any match this season. She now has three goals in her junior season.
The four goals doubled King's previous output from the first six contests of 2010.
The visitors took the lead as Emily Villas kicked home a goal 6:26 into the game.
Overall King had 14 shots, nine on goal, in the contest. Young Harris got a dozen shots with half being on goal.
King's Abbey Kitts (Tazewell, Va.) had five saves in the victory. Allie Matulia stopped five Lady Tornado shots.
The home team just had one offsides called while Young Harris was flagged nine times.
The four goals represent the most scores for King since a 4-0 victory over Reinhardt (Ga.) College win on Oct. 24, 2009, which came 11 contests ago. In those previous 10 matches King had scored five times combined.
King takes a trip to Limestone (S.C.) for a 4 p.m. contest Wednesday.
