BRISTOL, Tenn. - King College used two goals from Hannah Shankle in a 3-1 win over Concord (W.Va.) University in front of the home crowd Saturday.
Shankle, a junior from Bristol, Va., scored the game-tying goal in the 14th minute, unassisted. She booted home a rebound. Her final goal was in the 78th minute and provided insurance. Heidi Steger (Chattanooga, Tenn.) provided the assist.
The game-winning score came off the goal by Morgan Shelton (Chattanooga, Tenn.) as she gave the Lady Tornado a 2-1 lead in the 29th minute on a goal from the right side to the far post.
King improved to 2-7 on the season with a second straight home win. The Lady Tornado was a 4-1 winner over Young-Harris (Ga.) College last Saturday. Concord, third in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings, went to 4-5 overall.
Concord got the opening goal of the match by Kate Armentrout just two minutes into the contest. She finished in the upper right hand corner from the left side.
Abbey Kitts (Tazewell, Va.) played the opening 45 minutes in goal for King and had a save. Emilii Russell (Hendersonville, Tenn.) closed things out with the second half. She had a pair of saves.
The Lady Tornado won the shot category 15-7 and both teams had three corner kicks in the 90 minutes.
In the last three games King has eight goals with just two in the previous six contests. The Lady Tornado defense has stiffened up as well with just four goals in the last three outings compared to 22 in the opening six.
King will travel to Tusculum (Tenn.) College to play at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
