King opens Virginia Duals with win over Averett

HAMPTON, Va. – The King University men's wrestling team with a resounding victory over Averett University in the quarterfinals. The Tornado took eight straight victories, including three pins to defeat the Cougars 42-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Fourth-ranked Dustin Kirk got the Tornado going with a 14-4 major decision over Brandon Woody at 133 pounds.
  • Bryce Killian followed with a 17-0 technical fall over Joshua Linkous at 141 pounds before Landon Goforth posted the first pint for the Tornado.
  • Goforth pinned William Merrit in 1:29 at 149 pounds to give King a 15-6 advantage.
  • At 157 pounds, Matthew Danner topped Caleb Harmon on a 17-2 technical fall before Bailey Slattman pinned Jake Phelps in 55 seconds.
  • Darius Rutland earned a 17-0 technical fall over Corbin Ryder at 174, and Kody Eichlin gave King a 36-6 advantage with a 23-4 technical fall over Triston Kechter.
  • At 197 pounds, Elijah Seay capped the 42-12 victory with a 1:19 pin of Seth Wilson.

UP NEXT

  • King will take on Apprentice School at 2:00 p.m. in the semifinals on Saturday.
  • Averett faces Camden County College in the consolation bracket on Friday night.
