BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's wrestling team is off to a good start this season, and the Tornado moved up one spot in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. The Tornado are ranked 20th in the latest rankings while Dustin Kirk is still atop at 133 pounds. Joey Mammolenti also broke into the rankings at 174 pounds.
The Tornado were ranked 21st in the preseason poll, and have moved up to 20th in the latest installment. King wrestled their first dual, coming back to defeat Belmont Abbey College 23-22 on Tuesday.
Kirk remains in the top spot at 133 pounds as he saw action for the first time this season at the Georgia Open where he finished second. He won his first four matches before falling in the title bout on a tight 5-3 decision.
Mammolenti also took the mat for the first time at the Georgia Open and finished first. He won his first two matches by pin before taking a win by technical fall. He then defeated one of his teammates in the title bout. In the dual against Belmont Abbey, Mammolenti earned a 15-0 technical fall, helping the Tornado the 23-22 comeback victory.
King will be in action again on December 16-17 at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.
