King takes 4th at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The King University men's wrestling team came home with a hard fought fourth place finish at the Virginia Duals. The Tornado fell to runner-up Ferrum College 30-11 to start the day before rebounding with a 30-18 victory over Liberty College. It looked like the Tornado would take third place, but Camden CC came back to take a 22-20 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED - FERRUM

  • Ferrum got off to a hot start with a fall at 125 pounds, but fourth-ranked Dustin Kirk came back with an 8-2 decision over Bailey Cooper at 133 pounds to get King on the board.
  • Bryce Killian followed with a 17-5 major decision over Austin Smith at 141 pounds, putting King ahead 7-6.
  • However, the Panthers folled off four straight wins to open up a 23-7 lead.
  • At 184 pounds, Elijah Seay came up with a 16-3 major decision over Adam Bresson, pulling King within 23-11 with two matches remaining.
  • Ferrum won the final two matches to take the dual 30-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED – LIBERTY

  • King got off to a hot start against liberty, taking a win by forfeit at 125 pounds and Kirk followed it with a 17-2 technical fall over Ashton Robinson at 133 pounds to put King ahead 11-0.
  • Landon Goforth and Landon Reed later earned back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Goforth topped Brandon Robinson 5-4 and Reed pinned Andrew Burgette in 56 seconds, giving King a 20-6 advantage.
  • Following a pair of Flame wins, Seay and Valery, Jr. clinched the win for the Tornado. Seay took a 15-2 major decision over Josh McIlhenny at 184 and Valery, Jr. pinned David Trigg in 4:07.
  • Liberty won the final bout at 285, but the Tornado took the match 30-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED – CAMDEN CC

  • The Tornado got off to another great start behind Jacks and Kirk. Jacks took a 17-2 technical fall over David Harris-Norton at 125 pounds and Kirk pinned Alex Velez in 1:26.
  • Tyler Williams followed that with a tight 5-3 sudden victory over Jarrett Ziegler at 141 pounds to give King a 14-0 lead.
  • The teams traded forfeits at 149 and 157 pounds, giving King a 20-6 lead.
  • However, Camden CC then went on a run, winning the last five matches. They took a narrow 2-1 decision at 165 pounds and tight 5-4 decision at 184 pounds.
  • At 235 pounds, Halecki earned a 7-2 decision, giving Camden CC the 22-20 victory.

UP NEXT

  • King returns home on Saturday when they host Coker College in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) dual. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. in the Student Center Complex.
